国の名勝・天然記念物にも指定された景勝地「高千穂峡」。阿蘇火山活動の噴出した火砕流が五ヶ瀬川に沿って帯状に流れ出し、急激に冷却されたために柱状節理のすばらしい懸崖となった峡谷です。高いところで100m、平均80mの断崖が東西に約7kmに渡って続いてます。四季折々の自然美が魅力で、周辺には遊歩道も整備されており、趣のある散策が楽しめます。周辺には日本神話ゆかりの神々を祀る神社が数多く存在し、パワースポットが多いことでも知られています。高千穂峡のシンボルともいえる「真名井の滝」は、約17mの高さから渓谷に落ちる様子が迫力満点。天孫降臨の際、この地に水がなかったので天村雲命が水種を移した「天真名井」から湧き出る水が水源と言い伝えられている神秘の滝です。

青島をとりまく波状岩を「鬼の洗濯板」と呼んでいます。正式名称は「隆起海床と奇形波蝕痕」で、青島の周囲と日南海岸の海岸線に見られます。中新世後期（約700万年前位）頃に、海面下にあった岩が地質変動によって20度ほど傾きながら隆起し、波の浸食により柔らかい部分が削られ現在のような形が出来上がりました。青島から南の巾着島までの約8kmの海岸線に見られ、干潮時には海岸線に沿って沖合100mに及ぶ自然の不思議を思わせる岩肌が出現し、見事な景観を楽しむ事ができます。また昭和9年（1934年）に国の天然記念物に指定されています。

宮崎市の南東部海岸付近にある周囲約860ｍ、面積約4.4ヘクタールの「青島」にある「青島神社」。国の天然記念物「鬼の洗濯板」に囲まれた聖地で、縁結びの神社として知られており、昭和の時代には「新婚旅行のメッカ」とさえ言われていました。神社が創建された年代は明確ではありませんが、国司巡視記「日向土産」に「嵯峨天皇の御字奉宗青島大明神」と記されており、820年以前から奉祀されていたと考えられています。古くは島全体が霊域とされ、江戸の頃まで一般の入島は許されませんでした。古事記ゆかりの古くからの神社であることから、パワースポットとしても人気を集めています。

宮崎県都城市にある「関之尾滝」は、大淀川の支流・庄内川にある名瀑です。霧島ジオパークに属し、幅約40m、高さ約18mの「大滝」と、人工的に作られた「男滝」「女滝」の3つからなる滝です。大滝の目の前には吊り橋が架かり、豪快に流れ落ちる様を間近で望めます。男滝と女滝は小さいながらも真上に通路があり、普段あまり見ることのできないアングルから滝を見ることができます。滝の上流には火山の噴火によってできた、珍しい「甌穴群」があり、非常に貴重なことから国の天然記念物に指定されています。轟音とともに大量の水が流れる様子は豪快そのもので、大迫力とマイナスイオンを感じられるスポットです。

天照大神から日本を統治するよう命を受けた「ニニギノミコト」が、降臨した場所と伝わる鹿児島県霧島市。農業や豊穣の神であるニニギノミコトを祀るのが「霧島神宮」です。創建は6世紀と古く、南九州でも屈指のパワースポットとして知られています。度重なる噴火により、高千穂峰山頂から西の中腹、高千穂河原へと移り、1715年に現在の場所に再建されました。参道・境内を抜けると、朱色の荘厳かつ豪華絢爛な社殿が姿を現します。「勅使殿」には伝説の動物、獅子と獏が描かれ、顔料や貝で鮮やかに彩られています。社殿の前庭には、樹高約38.2m、樹齢約800年と推定される神木の杉「霧島メアサ」があり、南九州随一の「杉の祖先」ともいわれています。
